Artwork contest
Can you draw pictures (8 1/2" x 11" max) or other artwork that illustrate Matthew Henson's life? Can you make a sculpture or Matt and Peary that we could make a mold of?
Book report, essay, or drawing contests—
we award prizes

Want to hold a Henson & Peary art or book report contest? Your class can send us artwork, or book reports (you decide winners for us) and we'll make a webpage about the class. The reports and artwork will be permanently published on this site. Please provide a plain text copy of book reports or essays (so we can cut & paste text into a web page). We will award prizes such as books, posters, commemorative Peary coins, and Henson & Peary action figure sets. Please email us and discuss what you want to do.

We're looking for students with illustration skills; who can draw really well to help us create a kind of comic book about Matt and Peary. We also want to illustrate Matt's biography.
This is a 1940's illustration from a book called Our Negro Brother. Can you to help us illustrate Matt Henson's biography, Dark Companion, with drawings?

We also want to make small sculptures
of Matt and Peary together, on the top of the world. Can you do it? Something that fits on a table, desk or shelf—about the size of a dinner plate or a melon. We'd like to produce pieces we can mold in resin and sell to help raise money for the Peary & Henson Foundation, and educational charity. But most importantly we want people to have a Peary & Henson at the North Pole sculpture.

If you enter your drawings (letter size* so we can scan it) or sculpture you may win one of our Henson Awards shown at left.

We really are looking for some talented people who can help us illustrate Matthew Henson's biography, Dark Companion. If your drawings are good enough for what we want you will be asked to produce a series of them to highlight special moments in Matt's life. This means your work will be published. Your artwork will be printed in a new edition of Dark Companion. Now that is something to have bragging rights on for a long time!

Matthew Henson by Martha Root

Matthew Henson bust from a 1969 Old Taylor (yes, the bourbon company) promotion. Made of a bondo-like plaster with "bronze" finish. Actually a very nice piece, but should have a prominently displayed name.

1930 era bronze bust of Matt by a famous artist. Not available to public viewing in the New York Explorers Club.
