To make sure they were at the Pole Commander Peary took navigation measurements with his sextant. That measures how high the sun is in the sky. With that angle and some math he could tell where they were. At the Pole they looked with a telescope to see if there was any land near by. There wasn't any. The North Pole is just a mathematical point in a field of ice.
